Last night at about 9:30, some residents in the apartments on 24th and University came running from their homes, the cause…the sound of true Iowa Hip-Hop coming from inside Mars Café. The source was Aeon Grey, performing on Scented Vinyl.
Once again music was played that you will only hear at Scented Vinyl, and for the most part only on vinyl. Aeon Grey surprised me with not just his collection of records, but the fact that he brought in a whole stack of 45’s; most of which was 70’s funk. Also, for the second time I played Avey Tare of the Animal Collective’s solo album Pullhair Rubeye frontwards and backwards….Here’s some of the playlist:
The Meters – Crissy Strut 7” The JB’s – Pass the Peas 7” Freddy Scott Orchestra – Hangin Out 7” Isaac Hayes – Tough Guys James Brown – Get Up 7” King Floyd – Groove Me 7” Gwen McCrae – 90% of Me is You
We also got to play some local hip-hop from the now defunct Rebels Advocate out of Iowa City, and a 12” of Aeon Grey’s “Average Joe” put out on Aplus9 Records. I must say the highlight for me music wise, and the major surprise was when Aeon pulled out Hurdy Gurdy Man from Donovan, which he gave too me!! Throughout the show we had a blast talking music, me drinking some fine Iowa beer, and Aeon drinking a fine Mars Mocha. It was fun to hear about searching for music to sample, and how he goes about finding music, specifically at our favorite record store ZZZ Records.
I don’t want to give away everything we talked about during the interview, because you should download it and have a listen…here is a bit about what you’ll hear. We talked about all of his past albums, including his last release and first full length album “Primate Curriculum”, plus everything else he has been involved in around the Iowa music scene.
We also talked a lot about his upcoming album “Lead Breakfast”. You can download the entire interview here... and find our more about Aeon Grey and listen to some of his music for free at his website www.aeongrey.com
We were also privileged to be among the first to hear tracks off of his new album “Lead Breakfast” and now you can two...right under the interview.
Oh, also check out the website for Mindy Hoskin, who does the artwork for Aeon Grey and some fantastic design work www.maydaydesign.com
