One of the best parts of Scented Vinyl, at least in my opinion, is the fact that it gives you the chance to really get to know local bands. Beyond just their music, we get to hang out, drink beers and play records; which really helps me and others get to know musicians from around the state, leading quickly to friendships.
Beati Paoli was one of my first guests on the show, and since I’ve gotten to know all the members pretty well, so I was really looking forward to this session. I know they all care deeply about music and were excited to share and talk about what they love. I was also told they would be covering a Prince song with a accordion, which was hard to picture until I saw it.
Due to a late Tee ball game, I arrived at Sonic Factory Studios just in time to see the band packing up. From what I’ve heard though, the session went great! Make sure to grab the two songs Jon Locker recorded, right now, for free! These songs are about as different as you can get from the “usual” sound of Beati Paoli, nothing electric.
We had to celebrate the release of Weezer’s new Red Album by playing a few Weezer songs, besides that this was one of the most diverse nights of music we’ve had, here is some of what we played…
Joy Division – Martin Hannett’s Personal Mixes Weezer – Pinkerton Weezer – Maladroit Iron and Wine/Calexico – In The Reins Eels – Electro Shock Blues The Who – The Kids are Alright Primal Scream – Screamadelica John Hartford – Gentle on My Mind Bonnie “Prince” Billy – Lie Down in the Light Gang of Four – Entertainment! Ghool – Splatterthrash
It’s been two years since Beati Paoli released the “Penny Dreadful” EP, and a lot of touring has followed. They’ve been around Iowa and to both coasts; including opening for the likes of Man Man, British Sea Power and Head of Femur. But after two years, and a few changes, Beati Paoli is ready to expand on their sound.
They are putting the finishing touches on their debut full-length album due out this fall; the songs on this album seem to truly represent what these four guys can do. From writing, recording, playing, and producing the album, they are also going to release it on their own record label The Noising Machine. Find out all about Beati Paoli by downloading the interview.
