Last night I was sitting in Sonic Factory Studio watching David Zollo play and contemplating taking a pull from Jon & Tony’s Templeton Rye that was being passed around. I really had no choice, I just had to; the music made me do it.
There are a number of artists that come out of Iowa that really make you proud to be from Iowa, artists like Bo Ramsey, William Elliott Whitmore, Slipknot and more. David Zollo is also one of those artists. His attitude towards making music, playing live music and really music in general is what you need to not just succeed in the music business, but enjoy yourself while doing it.
Last night was great, just great. We were running really late, which is not uncommon for Scented Vinyl, but we still managed to play some fantastic records. David and I found out that we are into a lot of the same music, for example early Elton John and Rod Stewart. We were excited to have the opportunity to play an album brought in by an audience member (Metal Rob) that featured Elton John on piano, Saxon “Rock the Nations”, we played Party Till You Puke.
Here is some of the rest of what was played…
Led Zeppelin - I The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds William Elliott Whitmore - Hymns For The Hopless Bob Dylan - The Basement Tapes Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced Leh'-nerd Skin-nerd
We had to get a bit close during the interview, as we only had one working microphone, but it didn’t matter as we both smelled of Rye. David Zollo has put out some excellent albums in the past decade, he has also played on and produced albums by: Bo Ramsey, Joe Price, Brother Trucker, Bejae Flemming, Todd Snider and more. We talk all about it in the interview as well as his recent appearance on the Late Show with Jay Leno, you can download interview right now.
The songs recorded at Sonic Factory of course turned out great! You can also download those right now, for free in the digital format. To experience what I got to last night, your going to have to go one of David Zollo’s live shows, which can be found at his website… www.myspace.com/davidzollo
