Dustin Smith
Interview
honestly a bit grumpy.  The Dustin Smith Band immediately snapped me out of it when they started their first song; both
Skyler and my ears perked up.  It’s great to go into these sessions completely blind, and to discover more of the hidden
talents from around the state.

The show ended up being one of my favorite, and more memorable sessions, although there was a major slip up on my
part.  After conducting what I considered to be the perfect interview, I turned around to save it, only to notice that the
computer was no longer recording!  We did get about four minutes of the interview, so I’ll post it, but you’ll have to visit
Dustin’s
website for more information.

The show itself was a blast!  Mars Café was packed and Dustin brought in some killer records, including the first ever Nick
Drake albums brought on the show…not just one, but all of them.  We also played new songs from William Elliott
Whitmore, since we were all fans.  Dustin actually discovered Will’s music while living and studying music in New
York…there is so much good music in Iowa, sometimes it takes leaving to realize it.

Here is what we played…
Nick Cave – Into My Arms 7”
Animal Collective – Feels
Nick Drake – Five Leaves Left
Nick Drake – Bryter Layter
Cat Stevens – Tea For the Tillerman
Sufjan Stevens – Seven Swans
Beach Boys – Surf’s Up
Bonnie “Prince” Billy – I See A Darkness
Stephen Stills – Manassas
Gordon Lightfoot – If You Could Read My Mind
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Gold Lion
William Elliott Whitmore – Animals In The Dark

All three members of the Dustin Smith band are from around Des Moines, but all have left at some point for various
studying interests. And all have played around the music scene with various other bands and musicians. Listening to them
live, it’s amazing how new it all is…Joel the drummer had to learn songs before the show started!  The Dustin Smith Band
heads into the studio next week with Logan Christian to start on a new EP, pay attention to these guys.
