Ed Gray
"The song killed the singer" Ed Gray sings in the song Drink off his recently released album "The
Late Gray Ed Great"... One of my favorite songs on the album.  Ed was gracious enough to come
down to Mars Café from Iowa City this past Monday, with a fantastic record collection, a smile on
his face, and no guitar.  By the end of the night though, he played three songs on an old guitar of
mine, the first three songs ever played on the thing.

I was really looking forward to having Ed Gray on the show, one of my favorite styles of music is
dark, lyric based Americana type music, if that narrows it down at all.  I had a feeling Ed and I
would have a lot in common music wise, and I was right.  He brought down some great records
from artists that I don't have on vinyl.  We played, Mark Eitzel, Simon Joyner, Yo La Tango, and
Lauren Mazzacane & Kath Bloom.  We also got in some local 45's by Liberty Leg out of Iowa City,
exactly our type of music.

The interview was one of my favorite yet, the whole thing was such a great time.  Ed has been
involved in the Iowa music scene for more than 15 years, and has played with some amazing
musicians, i.e. Simon Joyner.  He had a lot of interesting things to say about our music scene,
some of which really surprised me.  Quality wise, this was the best interview yet, the sound is
finally getting figured out at Mars Café.
