H&K is a power trio from Otho Iowa. The band started as the duo of Heather Kelly and Kirk Kaufman, who has quite the background in Iowa music. Kirk was in The Hawks, and owns Juniors Motel in Otho. Now they are three artists with diverse musical backgrounds and they’ve been creating a style all of they’re own. At one point Kirk even called it “Medieval Pop”. For having put out albums on vinyl himself with The Hawks, Kirk didn’t bring any down! They all promised they had sweet records at home, but on this night the music was up to me. I did have a couple of albums from artists who have recorded at Juniors Motel in the past 35 years, Slipknot and Brian Wilson. Here is what we played…
Slipknot – All Home Is Gone Wilco – Yankee Hotel Foxtrot The National – Alligator Cat Stevens – Teaser and the Firecat Bob Dylan – Together Through Life Elton John – Madman Across The Water Beach Boys – Pet Sounds Dirty Three – Cinder
H&K just released their debut album, “Catch a Rainbow” in April, but are ready to begin recording the follow up. They will be playing the AE Stage at the Iowa State Fair this year, head over to their website for more information and music links. Also grab the two songs we recorded at Sonic Factory with Skyler. Heather had Laryngitis especially for the show, but some how managed to nail it.
