I can’t believe it’s really Spring! Like most Iowans, I’ve felt like this past winter was one long cruel joke; so last night even after a mid-day rain the weather was perfect. All day I was looking forward to hanging out at Mars Café with some of my favorite records, Mill Stream Ale in hand, enjoying the music of Johnny Reeferseed and the Highrollers.
Jamie and Dusty of the Highrollers were on Scented Vinyl about 6 months ago, bringing in some classic albums by the likes of The Faces, Peter Tosh and Dylan, so I knew that they would not disappoint on their return visit. We got up to the café early this week so we could get to as many albums as possible. All of us had records that we were excited to share with each other, I might go as far as to say this was the greatest music night so far.
Here is some of what we played…
The Black Keys – Strange Times “45 The Band – Last Waltz Bonnie “Prince” Billy & Matt Sweeny – Superwolf RL Burnside – Come On In Dolly Parton – Country Music Collection David Bowie – In Person(bootleg) Ron Wood – Gimme Some Neck Sufjan Stevens – Seven Swans The Raconteurs – Consolers of the Lonely Leo Kottke – Dreams and All That Stuff The Decemberists – Castaways and Cutouts Radio Moscow – S/T Tim Hardin – 3 Beach Boys – Surf’s Up Prince – Controversy Steely Dan – Can’t Buy a Thrill Cat Stevens – Mona Bona Jakon Junior – Kimbrough and the Soul Boy – Sad Days, Lonely Nights Yardbirds – Rave Up Ry Cooper – Boomers Story
Wow, that is a lot of records.
Since we last talked with Johnny Reeferseed, they have entered the always great Sound Farm Studio to start work on a new album. With a few songs done, including one with Afroman, the guys are excited to get back in to finish it. We talk all about their new album and what’s in store for the Highrollers in 2008 during the interview. To find out more about the band, make sure to check out the past interview. And as always, grab the songs we recorded at Mars Café from both sessions…for free!
