Last night’s Scented Vinyl brought a couple of firsts; my first ever female guest host in Kate Kennedy. And not just
the first Joni Mitchell album, but the first 4 Joni Mitchell albums ever played on to the show. Needless to say, the
night had a very nostalgic feel to it.
The music of the night was very heavy with singer/songwriters, for me the highlight of the evening came in a 7” by
Johnny Cash, an early Sun Records 45 with a couple of covers on it…”Sugartime” & “My Treasurer”. It’s amazing
what you can find when searching through hundreds of dirty 45’s from a grandparents garage!!
Kate brought in 5 Joni Mitchell albums, and nothing else. So initially it was looking like the entire night might be
dedicated to Mitchell’s work(which was fine). But after looking through my records, Kate picked out a couple of
great male singer/songwriters to help split things up a bit. It worked like a charm, and the night’s music had a very
natural, almost planned flow to it.
You can see what I mean; here are some of the albums we played…
Joni Mitchell – For the Roses
Johnny Cash – Sugartime
Joni Mitchell – Miles of Aisles
Elliot Smith – From a Bedroom on a Hill
Joni Mitchell – Do Juan’s Reckless Daughter
Bonnie “Prince” Billy – Summer In The Southwest
Kate Kennedy has been writing music for only a few years, but that is not evident when you listen to her debut
album on Barely Bias “Circle, Spiral, Line”. The album came out last year, and you can listen to some of it for free
