I’m sick of starting off the show recaps complaining about Iowa’s weather, so this time I won’t. Last night was a beautiful, balmy 10 degrees, and we had enough new snow to cover up the muddy mess created the day before when it was 50. So I was excited to have Little Mojo on as my guests.
Before making our way to Mars Café, we again stopped by Sonic Factory Studio’s to have Tony Bohnenkamp and Jon Locker record a couple of songs for us. This time we weren’t alone, as we interrupted some recording they were doing with Bonne Finken…from what I’ve heard from her, expect cool things! You can download the two tracks Little Mojo played right now for free; one is even a brand new song.
I was excited to see that Josh and Nick brought in some great records; a couple of the artists had yet to be played on the show, can you guess which ones? If you guessed the Bangles, then you were half right, that was my album. I brought it in to play Manic Monday, and get to the bottom of what Manic actually means, which we did. The highlight for me was finally being able to play my favorite Tom Waits song, “Hold On”, which just might be the greatest song of all time.
Here is some of what we played…
Leonard Cohen – Songs From A Room Simon & Garfunkel – Bookends Tom Waits – Mule Variations Beach Boys – Surfs Up White Stripes – White Blood Cells Willie Nelson – Somewhere Over The Rainbow Bob Dylan - Street Legal Scorpions – Rock You Like A Hurricane Janis Joplin – Pearl Boston – Don’t Look Back Bangles – Different Light Arcade Fire – Keep The Car Running 45”
After almost ten years in our music scene, Little Mojo seems like a snowball getting not just bigger, but better all the time. Having sold over 11,000 copies of their first five independently released albums, the brothers have in recent years had the opportunity to record in professional studios with professional producers; the results being their strongest songs to date, and a whole lot of them.
Little Mojo has been recording a new album in New York, with hopes of a release later this year. In the mean time you can grab their recently released EP, “Inside Bleeding Out” it has six great songs for only five bucks. See them play live and pick up a copy, or go to www.myspace.com/littlemojo. Well go to the website anyways, there are some great pictures, lots of music and of course all the live dates.
