Monday night my head was still buzzing from my great weekend at the 80/35 Festival and about as congested as it’s
ever been; I guess that’s what you get for rocking out in the rain for hours on end, it was worth it. But by Monday
night I was good to go, still next to no voice, but I was excited to have Make Believe Machines on the show.
The reason I was so excited to see them play is because I never have, they hardly ever play live! I kept trying to talk
them into changing that, because the music was awesome. It was one of those sessions that I left extremely excited
about. They only recorded and played one song, as most of what they do doesn’t strip down easy, I know
everybody in the café wanted more though. Thankfully their album “Moral Calculus” is available at Mars to buy, or
on their website for only 4 bucks!
Justin brought in some great records too, all of which I haven’t had on the show before, except for one Books
album. I love it when we have a stack of records and we can just start at the top and work our way down.
Unfortunately the list isn’t that long, the reason is we were playing some loooong songs. The Joanna Newsom song
we played was near 13 minutes, which I believe is the longest song I’ve played on the show. Here is what we
played…
Nick Cave – Abbitor Blues
Joanna Newsom – Ys
The Books – Lemon of Pink
The Books – Lost and Safe
Stars of the Lid – And Their Refinement of the Decline
Stars of the Lid – The Tired Sounds of
For the first time in over 2 years, we forgot to take a group photo of us! This is extremely disappointing to me for a
number of reasons…1. I use it as the link on the website and 2. I have over 100 pictures of me on that stage with
Iowa musicians, so I feel like they missed out on part of the experience; we’ll have to find a different way to get it
done, maybe a bit of photoshopping or something.
