Max Jury first came to my attention when his mother came in and planned a cd release show at Mars Café last year. All I knew was that he was a 16 year old singer/songwriter from West Des Moines; the café was completely packed for the show, proving to everyone else what his parents already know, their son has talent.
It hasn’t even been a year since his self-titled release, and Max has surrounded himself with excellent musicians to work on the follow up. In between classes and homework, Max has been developing his sound for a full band, with help from Tony Bohenkamp and Jon Locker (owners of the Sonic Factory). Download the interview to find out how the year has treated Max since the release, and hear what he plans to do with his music after he graduates High School.
The music for the show was great, as I knew it would be. Max and I share a similar taste in music, and a love of great songwriters. Andrew Bird, Ben Kweller, and Randy Newman are among the favorites, so we made a point to have all of them on hand. We also had to play homage to the Boss with two records; Max is getting ready to go see him in Minnesota for his birthday!! Here is what we played…
Nick Cave – Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus Randy Newman – Little Criminals Birdy Nam Nam – Manual for Successful Rioting Ben Kweller – Changing Horses Joe Cocker – Jamaica Say You Will Elton John – Honky Chateau Handsome Furs – Face Control Cat Stevens – Greatest Hits Andrew Bird – Nobel Beast Rod Stewart – Gasoline Alley Jackson – Browne – Late for the Sky Weezer – Pinkerton Bruce Springsteen – Born in the USA Bruce Springsteen – The River Jon Lennon/Yoko Ono – Double Fantasy
