What a great way to start a two week break for Scented Vinyl, with the best show of the year so far. After finally getting to see Maxilla Blue a month ago at the Des Moines Social Club’s Subjective Circus, I’ve been looking forward to this one ever since. That and I knew Aeon Grey would bring in and introduce me to some great records.
Maxilla Blue supplied all the music for the night and The Floor Spiders rearranged the tables and danced throughout the show, together they had my son trying to spin on his head when we got home singing “Rocks, Pebbles, Dirt it’s all in my heaaaad”, it was pretty funny. The whole night was great, recording at Sonic Factory, playing albums, the interview and performance, all of it great. I have to believe this is the vibe that Maxilla Blue brings to every show.
Aeon Grey isn’t the only one in the group with records, but after a trip to Chicago and a bunch of new 45’s, the music for the night was mostly his and all of it funky. Here is some of what we played…
James Brown – Funky President (People It’s Bad) James Brown – Coldblooded Willie Clayton – Baby, You’re Ready Pigmeat Markham The Nite-Liters The Prolifics General Crook The Meters Roma Violenta – OST Freddie North Mojo Jazz Presents – Family Affair Hip Hop Roots
Maxilla Blue is relatively new to the Iowa music scene, but the three members are not. Asphate Woodhave, Aeon Grey and DJ Touchnice have all been performing around the state for a number of years. But with the formation of Maxilla Blue, they all seem to be in a place where they are most comfortable. Their debut album “Beat-N Path Vol. 1” was released in April, and they have been performing pretty steadily since then, leading up to a performance at the 80/35 Festival Fourth of July weekend.
The album was released on their own label Central Standard Records and is available at ZZZ Records, Mars Café, iTunes, cdbaby and more. But the best place to pick up a copy would be at Maxilla’s next show, which happens to be this Friday at the Vaudeville Mews. Find out all about the group by downloading the interview and song’s, also online at their website.
Time for me to take a break from scooping water out of my basement to head down South; Bonnaroo, I’ll be back on Thursday!
