This show with North Of Grand was one that I was personally really excited for, in the same way I was excited for Beati Paoli the week before. Both bands put on unique, first time acoustic performances.
The show started a little earlier then usual because NOG had to high-tail it down to the Mews for a full blow rock show with Detroit band The High Strung, who also stopped by Scented Vinyl to check out the acoustic performance and spin a record of their own. www.myspace.com/thehighstrung (find out more about them, they rule)
North Of Grand brought in some great 45's, so we started off the evening playing records by House Of Large Sizes, The Figgs and more. We also played the first ever 78 on Scented Vinyl, it was by a French band. An audience member was nice enough to bring it in to play, and we had a very cool moment...I played the 78, which was made in the early 1900's, then went right into The High Strung album, which was put out a couple years back. We played vinyl that was pressed almost exactly 100 years apart, back to back. It was a musical moment that you had to be at Mars Café to enjoy.
After the records we got right into the interview, which went really well. We talked about the history of North Of Grand, the albums they've released and the new album they are getting ready to release. We also talked a lot about the Iowa Music Scene, which they have been apart of for the past 4-5 years.
