If my son had to choose a favorite band, it would probably be The Flaming Lips, but coming in a close second maybe even tied for first, would be The Poison Control Center. So we were both delighted to have Patrick Fleming of The PCC on the show.
There really is no better way to spend a cold Iowa evening, then in a coffee shop enjoying a beer, listening to records with friends. Patrick brought down some great ones too, as he is also a collector of music in the vinyl form. He and his wife Ashley even brought me down a present…a signed Frank Sinatra record! Frank was even nice enough to personalize it for me; this will be framed and placed right next to my signed Paul Simon album.
The Poison Control Center were one of my first guests on Scented Vinyl, last April they stopped in for a quick session before a show with Casper And The Cookies, and brought some amazing albums then, so I had high expectations for the music this time.
Here is some of what we played…
Wilco – A Ghost is Born Beach Boys – Smiley Smile Neutral Milk Hotel – Aeroplane Over The Sea Broken Social Scene – S/T Belle And Sebastian – Tigermilk Pavement – Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain The Band – Last Waltz Flying Machine – S/T ELO – Telephone Line “45 The Envy Corps – Story Problem EP
After releasing “A Collage of Impressions” this past summer on Afternoon Records, The PCC have been doing what they’ ve always done; taking their high-energy show anywhere they can. From the CMJ Festival to a couple of Daytrotter Sessions, they had the opportunity to do some pretty cool things last year and with good reason as the album showcases four very talented Iowa musicians.
If you’ve been to a Poison Control Center show then you know just how crazy things can get, which is why it was fun to have just Patrick down to play unplugged. We had the chance to hear my favorite PCC songs completely acoustic plus a couple of new songs, including a duet with Ashley Tape Fleming; a preview of a new song from their new band Maude Make-And-See. These are going on my iPod right away, and they can yours too because their free!
The Poison Control Center will be opening for Cursive this April in Iowa City as part of the Mission Creek Music Festival. Find out more and listen to more at their website Poison Control Center.
