Last night I felt kind of ridiculous walking into Mars Café dressed as a pirate; until I noticed Tigger enjoying a beer on stage. That’s when I knew that doing a special Halloween show with Soapbox Prophets was a great idea. There was also a skeleton, a cowgirl/cat, a toga, and of course we had lots of candy to pass out.
This week the music was louder than most with a lot more straight up Rock N’ Roll albums. One of the things that has been fun about the show is learning not just about the bands, but what music different artists are into. It’s especially great when I find that we are into the same things, such was the case last night when Deb and I realized that we are both huge Kings Of Leon fans and even went to the same show in Kansas City earlier in the year.
There hasn’t been many repeat albums on the show since starting back in March, so I was surprised to see Karen with the second copy of Guns N’ Roses “Appetite For Destruction”…with the original cover!! (It really is a cool cover, you have to see it).
Here is some of the rest of what we played…
Alice Cooper – Love It To Death Aerosmith – Rocks Led Zeppelin – I Nirvana – Bleach Coal Miner’s Daughter – Soundtrack G N’ R – Appetite For Destruction The Doors – LA Woman Kings of Leon – Aha Shake Heartbreak The Allman Brothers – Live At Fillmore East
The Soapbox Prophets have been playing quite often around Des Moines the past three years, and put out an excellent album last year with “Stranger Then Strange”. The story of how the band came together is very interesting and we talk about it right away in the interview…which can be downloaded for free right here. James, who plays guitar and sings, could just possibly be the guitarist to ever play the Mars Café stage, which is why he also teaches guitar. (We also talk about that in the interview)
Check out their website to hear some music and see when/where they are playing next… www.myspace.com/soapboxprophets also look at CDBaby.com to buy their album “Stranger Then Strange” and many other excellent Iowa Bands.
