Every session we record at the Sonic Factory Studios seems to be drastically different from week to
week; we never know what we’re getting into each Monday night. This month has been full of perfect
examples… great ambient music last week from Make-Believe Machines, full on rock in a few weeks
from Rocket Transfer, and this week two excellent singer/songwriters.
Darren Matthews is definitely not new to Iowa music, having played with The High and Lonesome years
ago, and too many musicians to name since. Molly Matthews on the other hand has only been singing for
a crowd since the formation of Thankful Dirt, just under a year ago. Although you wouldn’t know it
when she opens up and Darren starts picking, it’s more of that Iowa sound that I’ve come love.
For this show I almost didn’t even bring any records up, I had a feeling that Molly and Darren would
have more then enough to fill the night, which of course they did. I have a list of artists to check out, as
pretty much all of last night was an education in great music. I was able to slip in a Papa M album that fit
the mood for the evening, but the rest of the albums were up to them. Here is what we played…
Terry Reid – Seed of Memory
Ramblin Jack Elliott – Young Brigham
Bobby Charles – S/T
Desmond Decker – Israelites
Levon Helm – and the RCO All Stars
Old and in the Way – S/T
Jimmy Cliff – Harder They Come
Van Morrison – Astral Weeks
Papa M – Whatever Mortal
Martin Bogan & Armstrong
Bonnie Prince Billy – Masters and Everyone
Joe Cocker!
Hank Wilson is Back Vol. I
Ween – Quebec
Taj Mahal – De Ole Folks at Home
Louis Armstrong – in the 30’s
Little Milton – Grits Ain’t Croceries
