After nearly six months of doing Scented Vinyl, last night I finally had my first repeat guest. Brent Houzenga was first on the show with Josh Boyd and the Good Goddamns, this time he was here with Zach Allison and their new band Ticklish. Besides the music, we were also celebrating Brent’s latest showing of his artwork at Mars Café, which you have all of October to check out…unless you can’t wait, then you can just look now at www.brenthouzenga.com
We probably played more records last night than any other, Brent brought in all of his, and I had mine, plus one of Mars best Batista's Brandon brought in Greg Allman’s first solo album “Laid Back” and a stack of others. We had about three straight hours of unique music at the café, although one dude sitting in front of the speakers with his headphones on didn’t really appreciate it, I wish I had a picture.
The highlight for me was an album that Brent had just received from his grandmother, it was the second album Johnny Cash released on Sun Records; 1958’s “Johnny Cash Sings The Songs That Made Him Famous”.
Here is some of what we played…
Pinback – Summer in Abandon The Shins – Oh, Inverted World Band of Horses – Everything All The Time Elvis Costello – This Years Model The Legendary Shack Shakers The Beastie Boys – Paul’s Boutique Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew – Spirit If… Animal Collective – Strawberry Jam Bob Marley – Rastaman Vibrations
Zach Allison has been involved in the Iowa music scene for awhile now with his band Funks G, who just wrapped up recording an album which will be out by the end of the year. Find out more about Funks G and listen to some of their music at www.myspace.com/dubtownrecords
Despite the both of them being busier than most people; Brent and Zach have started Ticklish because they love music, we talk all about it and Brent's art in the interview…
